Movies based on video games are almost never a good idea. Reboots of movies based on video games couldn’t possibly be any better, right? Or maybe that’s the way to do it? Regardless, nearly 17 years after Angelina Jolie’s original foray as Lara Croft in Tomb Raider, Oscar winner Alicia Vikander will take over in the upcoming movie of the same name.
This one sees Vikander starring alongside Daniel Wu, Walton Goggins, and Dominic West — a fantastic cast that can hopefully dig Tomb Raider out from its low expectations.
The first trailer for the movie — which was leaked on Wu’s Instagram and quickly made its way around the web before the official Warner Bros. release — has Croft thrust into adventuring to take over her father’s quest. She travels to a desert island, makes some intense jumps (which video game fans might remember from frustrating nights with the controller), and has to literally explore some sort of tomb, which is to be expected I guess.
As for the trailer, this one seems pretty focused on the gaming, with Croft doing slo-mo jumps and sliding under obstacles. But, hey, maybe this reboot of a video game series might inspire some good new video games.
